Sevilla

I read somewhere that Sevilla was voted the most romantic place in Spain, and I have to agree. It’s just lovely!

The beautiful Plaza de Espana

Real Alcázar

First, the Real Alcázar is simply amazing. It’s an old Moorish fort that then became the summer palace of kings and queens, dating back so long that you can see the change in ownership religion over the years in each different room. For example, one room will have Moorish architecture, and the next has all Christian figures on the floor tiles.

You can see the Moorish influence in Southern Spain, especially in the Real Alcazar palace

There is a lot of water throughout the property because water is needed to survive and therefore thought to be an important symbol in Spanish architecture.

The architecture of the Real Alcázar is simply amazing and photos don’t do it justice. It will take a few hours to see every room in the palace, so leave yourself 3-4 hours. It has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is well worth the visit!

Sevilla Cathedral

In addition to the Real Alcázar, the Sevilla Cathedral is incredible for some photos. It is the largest Gothic cathedral and 3rd largest church in the world. The cathedral was also declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Plaza de España

One of the most romantic things you can do in Sevilla is the Plaza de España, located inside the Parque de Maria Luisa. It is a landmark of the Renaissance Revival in Spain.

Inside the building, you can find the Alcoves of the Provinces; tiled walls that represent the different provinces of Spain. For 5 euros, you can rent a rowboat for 30 minutes and paddle around the moat to get a unique perspective of the 4 bridges which represent the 4 ancient kingdoms of Spain. Renting the boat is cheap, easy, fun, and incredibly romantic. It would be nice to bring a picnic and have a snack in the boat in front of the fountain!

Seville is a beautiful town full of history and wonderful architecture and a city which everyone should visit, hopefully more than once. A few days in this city are necessary to see everything, and everything is walkable. Horse and buggy tours are also available with English-speaking guides that will tell you the history of the city.

Hotels and hostels are abundant so do your homework and you can get a great deal! We stayed at Hostal Leonardo da Vinci, exactly across from the cathedral, and it was wonderful. It does itself a disservice by calling itself a hostel; we didn’t share a room or a bathroom and everything was wonderfully clean! It’s a wonderful place to stay if you’re visiting Sevilla on a budget.
