Product Review: Gogo Unique Scratch Off Travel Map

I have a confession: I’m a terrible gift buyer. No matter the occasion, I can never seem to get that big happy reaction I’m looking for. I’ve given that reaction to plenty of other people, but never seem to get it in return.

What kinds of travel gifts do I get that make me scream and jump for joy? Plane tickets, hotel stays in real Irish castles, or a train ride through Italian vineyards. Okay, those might be a little unreasonable to give a traveler as a gift. The countries are covered in gold foil that’s easy to scratch off, like scratching off a lottery ticket. It even comes with a scratch off pen and cloth. Underneath is a bright, vibrant, colorful flag of each country. There are little boxes at the bottom with flags of each country in alphabetical order.

The map is a good size: 23″ by 33″. It makes it easy to see islands, small countries, and what’s on each flag. The countries of Western Europe actually have a zoom bubble in the left corner to get a better view of some of the smaller countries. The map fits in a standard size frame as well.

Cons

Once you put it in a frame, it’s more effort to take it out and scratch off another country
Even standard size frames in this size are expensive
Map seems to be missing Hawaii
Hard to keep map unrolled without a frame or heavy objects weighing the corners down

Tips

Flattening the map out: Find a big, out of the way table and clear packing tape. Tape the sides down and leave there for about a week. Eventually, curled map will flatten out. You may have to leave heavy objects like a laptop on top of the tape to keep it from curling up.

Getting all the gold off: It’s best to use the scratch off pen tool that comes packed with the map. Keep going over it until all the gold is gone. I haven’t scratched off the flag underneath yet. The gold comes off easily, the colors underneath don’t.

Framing: Try to find a 23″ x 33″ glassless frame. Framing the map will make it easier to hang on the wall to admire, and glassless frames will make it easier to scratch off more countries as you travel more.
